KAMLOOPS — Kamloops native Logan Stankoven has been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, one of two former Kamloops Blazers captains who were traded on NHL trade deadline day.

The 22-year-old Stankoven was part of the trade that saw the Dallas Stars acquire Finnish forward Mikko Rantanen. The Stars also gave up two first round and two third round to acquire Rantanen, who joined Carolina from the Colorado Avalanche in January.

The trade comes just days before the Stars were set to play the Canucks in Vancouver. A large contingent of Kamloops hockey fans were expected to make the trip Sunday to watch Stankoven play at Rogers Arena.

Stankoven had nine goals and 29 points in 59 games with the Stars this season. He has 15 goals and 43 points in 83 career NHL games in Dallas.

Over the course of the 2023-24 NHL season, Stankoven was named the AHL’s Most Outstanding Rookie. He also earned spots on the AHL’s All-Rookie Team and the AHL First All-Star Team, despite having spent the last three months of last season in the NHL.

A second-round pick of the Stars in 2021, Stankoven also recorded his first career NHL goal and assist on 21st birthday in February of last year.

Vancouver native Fraser Minten, who succeeded Stankoven as Blazers’ captain in the 2023-24 season, was also traded Friday.

The 20-year-old Minten, a second-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2022, was dealt to the Boston Bruins in the Brandon Carlo trade.

Minten has split this season with the Leafs and their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, where he had six goals and 13 points in 26 games. He also had two goals and four points in 15 NHL games.

As a Blazer, Minten was traded to the Saskatoon Blades for Jordan Keller in Nov. 2023 as Kamloops moved to recoup some of the pieces that were shipped out during the Memorial Cup season.
