COLLINS: The NDP is kind of a wolf in sheep's clothing
THE NDP's BUDGET LAST WEEK was a cruel, heartless abandonment of the working man - the group who normally support the NDP. Did they get screwed over? You bet they did.Essentially, the government stopped operating the province, and provided no support and direction. And at the end of the day, Premier David Eby, recogniz...

COLLINS: Old songs about the future may be more accurate than we thought
IT WASN'T THAT MANY YEARS AGO that we went through what I call the period of "death music." So many hit songs contained reference to murder, suicide the kind of depressing songs that made you wonder why you even existed. I had some of those feelings Tuesday as I listened to the B.C. budget. I thought that per...

COLLINS: How far out of the box should we think?
I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING WITH INTEREST the on-again, off-again discussions at Chase council over the use of golf carts on community streets. Although I don't think much of the idea, I like the determination of those who put ideas out for discussion and aren't afraid to have them picked apart or vetoed. Many of our biggest d...

COLLINS: Are we any closer to understanding the human mind?
THIS QUESTION is being asked more and more as we work through this period in our history. Is it more violent than other periods in our history? Probably not, but the frequency of these tragic events - and the publicity attached to them - certainly makes it seem that things have never been as bad as they are now. The &qu...

COLLINS: We're losing the drug wars. Is there hope?
TO ANSWER THE QUESTION in the headline - there's always hope, but it's fading fast. And while suggestions to deal with it are abundant, none of them shows any evidence of long-term success.Treatment centres have shown promise, safe-injection sites were once the golden solution. Many offshoots of these basic ideas have ...

COLLINS: How long can we hold off the dictator?
THAT'S THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM right now. We are working hard to diversify. Hoping against hope that we can reduce our dependence on the U.S. and maintain our sovereignty in the face of all the threats, the tariffs and the disdain of a president seemingly gone mad with power. It will not be an easy battle. Huge tariff...

COLLINS: City hall - too much, too fast?
IF ANYTHING GETS PEOPLE WORRIED, it's rising costs. Groceries, housing, city services and taxes. The dilemma facing most businesses these days is that they don't have much control over the costs. If beef goes up? You're going to be paying a premium for that steak you're planning to have on the barbecue this week. Salmon...

COLLINS: Milobar has a big challenge
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SHY about my support for the Milobar family. Over the years, I believe they have done the city proud. I believe Peter was a good mayor and a good MLA.Like many MLAs, Peter had some tough decisions to make after Kevin Falcon blew up the B.C. United Party. Some, like MLA Todd Stone, opted to leave the l...

COLLINS: Okay, I might have been wrong
SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I remember commenting that I thought the idea of an outdoor skating rink at Riverside Park was a harebrained scheme that was a colossal waste of taxpayers' money and would not be technically feasible in a place like Kamloops because we didn't get enough cold weather in the winter. Councillor Nancy Be...

COLLINS: Will Trump survive to 2028?
SO MANY THEORIES. So many conspiracies. And now that the U.S. midterms are less than a year away, the question on many minds is, "Will there be a chance for Trump to salvage the mid-terms?" And my response is, "Anything is possible."Despite all the harebrained schemes, the threats, accusations, the ...

COLLINS: There's a massive hole in the ground at Royal Inland
IN ONE OF MY MANY stays at Royal Inland Hospital over the past three years, I was placed in a ward overlooking the south side of the hospital grounds. Every morning, I woke up and looked out the window and saw the construction underway for the new half-baked cancer treatment centre. Sadly, there was a large gap in the ...

COLLINS: Does the new year bring new hope?
AS WE MAKE OUR WAY through this wild and crazy journey called Life, we will be faced with challenges we may not have anticipated. We can work around many of them by making better choices, eating healthier, getting more exercise. We can deal with those by being more disciplined, by grabbing the bull by the horns, so to ...

COLLINS: Some resolutions are amusing; others aren't so much
MANY OF US HAVE MADE new year's resolutions at some point. Usually, we do so with a laugh, often including a touch of humour. Common resolutions might include losing weight, exercising more or eating healthier. I especially sympathize with those who genuinely need to stick to their resolutions to become healthier. I kn...

COLLINS: And so this is Christmas
AND SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS. The white blanket covering the ground this morning belies the fire burning just under the surface. The brilliance of John Lennon 's words shout out to us event hough he wrote the song half a century ago. The words are deceptive. You have to "get" where Lennon is going. And most don't...

COLLINS: Is life really like a box of chocolates?
NORMALLY ON A DAY LIKE TODAY, the last Sunday before Christmas, I would be relaxing in my chair, maybe in front of a fire, counting the good things that happened over the year, saying a prayer for those less fortunate, and then sitting down to a scrumptious dinner. But the past couple of years, the quote from Forrest Gu...

COLLINS: NDP commits big money to another healthcare experiment
THE NDP, LAST WEEK, announced major funding for a project they hope will help reduce the number of closures at smaller ERs. The plan would kick off at four hospitals - Princeton, Lillooet, Clearwater and Nakusp. These hospitals are less busy, so it's a good place to experiment. The program is nicknamed IH LINK-ED. (Jus...

COLLINS: The free-for-all in politics
WHEN SPECULATION ABOUT ELECTIONS starts hitting the gossip trails, I will have - as most reporters - already started the journey to get down to the basics. What does the party believe? How much faith do we have that they will carry out the party's goals and work hard for the people who have placed their trust in that c...

COLLINS: William has taken care of it already
THERE ARE FEW WRITERS who have left so much of their work, short or long that describes the human condition and is worth ongoing study as the works of William Shakespeare.Every play, every Shakespearean sonnet - everything that's old becomes new.And his description of how hell had become empty because everyone who shou...
