COLLINS: Time to put priority on our issues
FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, all attention has been focused on the big white elephant to the south of us and the man who would be king who has upended the entire world order, creating chaos. At the same time, we need to take this opportunity to stare at our navel, examine our future goals and make a plan to reach them...

COLLINS: Parking woes in the Lansdowne Street parkade
WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG to fix the elevator in the Lansdowne Street parkade? If you Google the parkade, it is listed as being 'accessible'. However, given that the elevator has been out of service for over three weeks now, not to mention the times it was out of order during the winter months, parking anywhere above th...

COLLINS: Chalk one up for Kamloops
OVER THE YEARS, Kamloops has been seen as a poor second cousin to Kelowna. We are still a mining and mill town, still a dusty city without the beauty of our southern neighbour. So it was nice to get some backhanded good news last week that Kamloops is considered one of the best-positioned cities in the country to withs...

COLLINS: Are you kidding me?
I'M TOTALLY IN SHOCK over how easily Prime Minister Mark Carney got bowled over by President Trump. Since the president put his tariffs in place, Canadians have risen in anger against the roughshod and illegal tactics by the Trump followers, all of them seemingly wanting to move from a democratic society to an authorit...

One Man's Opinion
COLLINS: Sometimes, we get it right
I HAVE CRITICIZED GOVERNMENTS on the haphazard way we've grabbed available land to put up affordable housing to meet the province's demands. That there is a demand for such housing is pretty obvious. We need to find a way to support those living on the streets, cold and starving, unable to cope in a drug-filled world. ...

COLLINS: Let's call a spade a spade
MOST PEOPLE ARE CAUTIOUS in trying to pinpoint Donald Trump's leadership style. Is he a fascist, a dictator, an autocrat, a narcissist, or a king? The Oxford English Dictionary - remember that Merriam-Webster is probably persona non grata right now - says fascism is an extreme right-wing political system or attitude th...

COLLINS: Who's Your Choice?
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, who is the fairest one of all? Is it the quick-to-place-blame Pierre, or the man who walks out of the Liberal fire to make the party rise from the ashes? These questions will be answered in a month, when Pierre of Polievre, Esq., who until recently seemed the heir-apparent to the throne prev...

COLLINS: Sometimes we realize we've made a huge blunder when it's too late to change it
NOTE TO MARK CARNEY: I know you are starting your term with rose-coloured glasses, but you will never forge a strong and lasting relationship with Donald Trump. The man seems too untrustworthy. You could never rely on him because he just makes his own decisions, pulling apart the economy, destroying the education syste...

COLLINS: In times of crisis, important things get ignored
WHILE MOST OF THE NEWS these days centers around the absolute devastation of the world economic order caused by the Demons of Destruction south of the border, it's easy for smaller items to slip through. How many people knew the city popped in a 9 per cent tax hike on Tuesday? It was no surprise that seniors were left ...

COLLINS: The rom-com world is not the real world
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BLESSED with a love of reading. And I read everything. From biographies to romance to my favourite author, David Baldacci, and everything in between. It's interesting to note that many of the romance stories deal with people from small towns who leave to seek fame and fortune - and then return to thos...

COLLINS: The slime is definitely becoming worse in Washington
GROWING UP, my dad and I went fishing almost every weekend. Some of my fondest memories. The only thing I really disliked was trying to grab the slimy bodies as they flapped around as you tried to gently pry out the hook and release them. That slimy feeling has stayed with me forever. But the only time it bothers me is...

COLLINS: The red horde has unleashed its first salvo
THE WHITE HOUSE is starting to look like party central. The White House and Capitol Hill should be the most formal buildings in the country. But then you have Donald Trump, Elon Musk and the rest of the red state clowns making the halls of dignity a joke. These people have, in a matter of a couple of months, brought th...

COLLINS: It's sad to see so many DEI initiatives cut back
WE HAVE BEEN SADDENED by the number of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) projects that have come undone since the new U.S. administration was sworn in a couple of weeks back. A number of initiatives were started during the Biden administration to make people aware of gay rights, lesbian rights, transgender rights a...

COLLINS: The Mighty States are starting to crumble, both physically and ideologically
AS MOST OF YOU KNOW, I often refer to the land below us as the States of America. They can no longer be referred to as "United." These States may wind up changing their focus. I don't know if that's possible, but I think it might be worth a chance. One plan is to plant a series of sad plants adjacent to some ...

ASIDE FROM THE EFFORTS of Donald J. Trump and Elon Musk to get their sweaty hands on our money and our country, there have been needs that deserve a resolution. And those needs cost money - whether it's health care, the economy, climate change... the list drags on. While we're assessing the latest Trump conspiracies, w...

COLLINS: Simon and Garfunkel didn't get it quite right
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL but haunting songs ever was Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence. Given when it was written, it speaks to lost hope. WE ALL HAVE OPINIONS. You have yours. I have mine. Most of these opinions are based on very little real information. We have a very small picture of the workings of the world.
