KAMLOOPS — The identities of two residents of a North Shore home that was damaged in a fire early Monday (April 27) morning have been made public.

An online fundraiser identifies the duo as a couple named Jaylie Holmes, a volunteer firefighter for the Monte Creek Fire Department, and her partner Duncan Riddell.

According to the fundraiser organizer and Holmes’ sister, Rebecca, the couple woke up to their mobile home on Larkspur Street filling up with flames and smoke, with their emergency exits engulfed.

While Holmes and Riddell were able to escape with the clothes on their backs, their home was consumed by fire within minutes.

“They lost everything. From their cars, phones, clothes and personal belongings, to their two beautiful kitties, Honey and Bee, who they loved like children. Our hearts are completely broken for them,” Rebecca writes. “This comes just a few days after a devastating tragedy in Duncan’s family. They were preparing to travel to Toronto tomorrow to be with loved ones and now are facing the added stress of replacing essential documents like passports and IDs.”

A goal of $5,000 was set to raise funds for the couple. As of Tuesday (April 28) morning, more than $10,000 had been raised.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) responded to Larkspur Street at around 2:05 a.m. Monday where two mobile homes and two vehicles were involved in a fire. One mobile trailer was a complete loss. The two vehicles and the other mobile home sustained significant damage.

Speaking to CFJC Today, KFR Platoon Chief Will Harlock says the cause of the fire is still undetermined after investigators were back on scene Monday. He adds KFR investigators are coordinating with Kamloops RCMP.
