Kamloops unveils plans to celebrate Stanley Cup with Logan Stankoven

The city also notes 100 attendees will win an opportunity to take a photo with Stankoven and the Cup, with tickets handed out at the event. Lucky ticket-holders will be chosen for an immediate photo opportunity with up to six people allowed in one photo.

The 23-year-old Stankoven claimed hockey’s holy grail with the Carolina Hurricanes to become the first player from Kamloops to accomplish the feat since Mark Recchi with the Boston Bruins in 2011. Recchi brought the Stanley Cup to Kamloops on Aug. 12, 2011.

Stankoven’s name has already been engraved onto Stanley Cup, which began its annual summer tour in Montreal last month.

“Council is excited to welcome Logan Stankoven and the Stanley Cup to Kamloops,” said Deputy Mayor Bill Sarai. “Logan’s remarkable achievement is a source of pride for our community, and we’re thrilled to celebrate with him, his family, friends and fans. We look forward to sharing this unforgettable moment together.”

The event is being organized in partnership with the Kamloops Blazers, Tourism Kamloops, Downtown Kamloops, the Kamloops and District Chamber of Commerce and the Kamloops Sports Council.

Parking will be available at Riverside Park and Sandman Centre, but it may be limited.

“Attendees are encouraged to use the nearby city parkades at 335 Lansdowne Street and 240 Seymour Street,” said the City of Kamloops in a statement.

“The Kamloops Bike Valet, a free parking service for active transportation devices, is located west of the playground in Riverside Park and is also available seven days per week, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.”

A total of three Kamloops-born players have lifted the Stanley Cup, as Doug Lidster also won championships in 1994 with the New York Rangers and again in 1999 with the Dallas Stars.
