North Shore BIA issues fire safety notice to businesses after recent fires in the area

KAMLOOPS — Fire crews responded to Larkspur Street at around 2:05 a.m. Monday (April 27) morning. Two mobile homes and two vehicles were involved in a fire.

“They did see the one unit that was heavily involved in flame and smoke and there was a little bit of extension to another unit right beside it,” said KFR Platoon Chief Will Harlock. “The residents from the unit that was involved actually got out of the building before our crews arrived on scene, and they were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and for some minor injuries. They were just observed and the next day they were removed.”

The blaze prompted the North Shore Business Improvement Association to put out a caution on social media, reminding local businesses in the area to take some time to prevent fires from sparking up.

“As we head into an extremely hot, extremely dry summer, being preventative is always the best opportunity,” stated Jeremy Heighton, Executive Director of the North Shore BIA. “We’ve requested that businesses remove pallets, boxes and other combustible material from around their buildings, secure their bins, and really make sure that they’re not part of the problem, but part of the solution.”

North Shore establishments are feeling the effects of recent fires. The owner of Drago’s Auto Pro was one of them within the last week. Taking to social media, Rob Guido let the community know about a fire that started behind their building on April 23.

Other businesses, like Save Big On Tires on Larkspur Street, feel a bit uneasy about the situation.

“We just noticed it. There is a big smell there, a big fire and smoke. We’re just coming out and we see a big fire,” concerned owner Norbert Bartus told CFJC Today. “What is happening now? Almost every day (there) is fighting here, people. I don’t know (about) the safety… and everybody worries about it for business, because we try to run our business and make sure everybody in our neighborhood is safe.”

Kamloops Fire Rescue says the one mobile trailer was a complete loss. The two vehicles and the other mobile home sustained significant damage. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

An online fundraiser has been started for the couple who have lost their home in the fire.
