Fortune Drive construction on track and on time, according to city staff

KAMLOOPS — Construction season is well and truly underway in Kamloops. One of the most visible projects currently affecting motorists is the Fortune Drive Road and Utility Works Revitalization.

The project started on March 16, with the goal of replacing an aging sanitary sewer line under the surface of Fortune Drive.

According to the city’s capital projects manager, crews are currently working to connect the residences along Fortune Drive to the new pipe that has been installed. That work is progressing as planned.

“The pipe, itself, is relatively easy. It’s a new 300-millimetre PVC pipe,” Matt Kachel explains. “It’s the service leads that are a bit more of a complication, just trying in old to new. But as I was saying, so far things are going pretty well, and the crew knows what they’re doing, and they’re doing a great job.”

The $2 million project will also see the road resurfaced from Overlanders Bridge to Oak Street. According to Kachel, right now construction should be done right on schedule.

“If all goes well, we should be wrapped up at the end of this month. At this point, I don’t expect that to change,” Kachel says. “We’ll be off the road and out of the way. There’ll be a bit of restoration, but we should be able to give the road back by the end of the month.”

Traffic continues to flow through the Fortune Drive corridor at half capacity throughout construction. Kachel says so far, there haven’t been any major issues with that aspect of the project.

However, he does have a reminder for motorists who travel that route.

“Maybe just focus on the zipper merge, a bit more. Based on my own observation, I’ve noticed everyone is just filling up the right lane a bit and when you see someone going by you in the left lane, they’re doing the right thing. They should go all the way to the end, and folks should be courteous and try to let them in. That’ll help with the congestion, and stop it from backing up too much.”
