City of Kamloops getting a jump on 2023 road work with Fortune Drive Sanitary Sewer project

KAMLOOPS — Monday (Mar. 6) marks the start of road construction season in the City of Kamloops, as the second half of the Fortune Drive Sanitary Sewer project gets underway.

The project stretches from Oak Road to the Overlanders Bridge and will last until at least late June. Construction will run Monday through Saturday from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm throughout the duration of the project.

While the surface of the road will be replaced, what lies under Fortune Drive will be the focus for city crews.

“The scope of the project is to replace an aging sanitary main, that’s sitting — unfortunately it’s right down the centre lane,” City of Kamloops Capital Projects Manager Matt Kachel explains. “It’s going to mean impacts to traffic more than it would have been if it had been just over to one side of the road.”

According to city officials, the current sanitary main dates back to the 1950s, and while it’s served the North Shore well, it’s definitely time for a replacement. This week, crews will focus on prep work, while next week will see excavation begin.

“This week, they’re just setting up and getting a lot of things ready — doing a bit of hydro-vaccing. There’ll be a little bit of presence on the site, but it won’t really ramp up until next week,” Kachel says.

While it is early in the year for city construction work to begin, Kachel says it’s going to be a busy construction season throughout Kamloops.

He wants to remind motorists to be aware and consider the safety of those folks working on the roads this spring.

“Obey the traffic signs, slow down, listen to the flag people, and try to take alternate routes if you can,” said Kachel. “Or, avoid peak hours. That’ll really help keep things moving quickly.”
