WESTWOLD, B.C. — Westwold residents will have until the New Year to voice their opinions on whether or not the community’s elementary school should stay open.

According to a Kamloops-Thompson School District Board of Education agenda, a web-based portal for input on the potential closure will be open until Jan. 19, 2019.

Talks of closing Westwold Elementary began around the beginning of the school year, when no children showed up on the first day of classes.

The agenda states that the comments from the web portal will be posted publicly, and administration will consider all feedback before providing a recommendation to the board regarding the future of the school on Jan. 28.

Only one person’s comments have been made public so far, which read: “I am not a parent however I feel strongly that our local children should have access to top quality education. If this can be supplied at the Westwold School then that is where they should be. Long time periods spent on bus to get them to other locations should be avoided if possible.”

According to a slide presentation on Westwold Elementary, the most recent peak year for enrolment in the school was in 1997 and 1998 when 70 students were enrolled. Those numbers eventually dropped to zero this year.
