COLLINS: Sorry — did you say, ‘Take your old guns to the post office?’

SOMETIMES, A PLAN SEEMS GOOD on paper, but in reality, absolutely sucks. For a long time, the post office has shipped guns of all kinds all over the country. They were secure, the public never saw them, and no one was the wiser.

Fast forward to the present where the government came up with another of its schemes to reduce the number of guns on the streets. The intent of the plan is a noble one. Get those killer machines to a place where they can be destroyed. You would think the place to take them would be the nearby police station. Apparently not. Some harebrained person in Ottawa floated the idea of taking them to the post office.

So picture this: we have a lineup in the post office.

“What would you like, ma’am?”

“Two stamps, please.”

“And you, sir? How can I help you today?”

“Yeah, I’d like to turn in this AR-15 assault rifle.”

It’s a little tongue-in-cheek, but you get the picture.

The post office, to me, is the absolute worse place to take the guns. Maybe the government feels the people with the big guns would like to avoid a target on their heads by avoiding the police, but surely they could find a better way to avoid panic. If I went to mail a letter and spotted some people with what looked like a gun, no matter how secure it seemed, I think I would just as soon go home and send an email.

Thanks to the post office for backing out of the program until a safer way is found. The post office cites security concerns as one of the reasons for backing out. No kidding.

In a nutshell, the intent is good, but the backend strategy sucks. Find a better way.
