B.C. Football Conference says Broncos-Rebels game won’t be re-scheduled

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Football Conference says the cancellation of the Broncos and Westshore Rebels game Saturday night was necessary to keep the players safe from smokey conditions in Kamloops.

On Sunday, the league determined the game will not be re-scheduled. Instead, when Kamloops and Westshore meet in Langford on Sept. 15, it will be a four-point game where the winner claims both games.

“A 4-point game is not an ideal situation, but all things considered we feel it is the best scenario for our players if their safety is our focal point, which it is,” said BCFC President Tyler McLaren.

There was talk during the Sunday meeting between members of the BCFC executive of a mid-week game, but at the end of the day they decided against it.

“Our executive felt that as much as air quality is a risk to our players safety, so are games with a short turnaround time. Additionally, all our coaches and support staff have regular jobs in addition to volunteering with their teams. Mid-week just isn’t an option,” noted McLaren.

The league is already looking ahead to this weekend’s game between the Broncos and Valley Huskers that is scheduled to take place at Hillside Stadium.

“We don’t honestly know at this point what the next few weeks holds, so will be paying very close attention to schedules, air quality,” said McLaren on Sunday in the wake of Saturday’s cancellation. “We are ahead of ourselves right now, but are presently looking at if this weekend’s game in Kamloops between the Broncos and Huskers could be played in Chilliwack if need be. We aren’t there yet, but we have to be ready for all situations.”

While the B.C. Football Conference said on Friday the game would tentatively go ahead, the degradation of the air quality in Kamloops forced its hands and it had no choice but to call the game.
