KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops RCMP officer is expected to make a full recovery after he was bear-sprayed this morning while attempting to arrest a man wanted for breach of probation.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the incident occurred at around 9 a.m. when the officer observed the wanted man on the beach near the Thompson River.

“When the officer informed the suspect that he was under arrest, he took off running,” she says. “The officer followed. At one point the suspect turned and bear-sprayed the officer in the face.”

She says the foot chase continued and the officer was able to apprehend the suspect in the 200 block of Tranquille Road. Shelkie says the officer was able to subdue the suspect by dispersing his own oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray.
