KAMLOOPS — With the weather gods shining down on us this weekend McAthur Island is playing host to two major sports tournaments under perfect conditions.

Forty-eight teams from all corners of the province, and in between, are here for the girls provincial “B” cup tournament.

Teams are competing in six age groups from U-13 to U-18.

“The B Cup is basically created for teams that come from outlying areas,” says B.C. Soccer president Kjeld Brodsgaard, “It’s difficult to find competitive opportunities to compete on equal basis for teams that come from smaller centres like Nelson, compare that to Burnaby with 700,000 people.”

Kamloops Youth Soccer has seven teams competing in five of six age divisions.

While the teams play for a provincial championship, the tournament also serves as a recruiting ground for university and college soccer coaches.

“Kelly Shantz from the TRU WolfPack is going to be out this weekend looking at some of the talent for future reference,” says KYSA executive director Keith Liddiard, “There are other college scouts coming through who will be looking at players.  Obviously they’ll be looking at the older divisions, because they’re looking for immediate help — but we certainly have an opportunity for exposure to some high level coaches,” says Liddiard, “You never know where that may lead — college or some professional clubs in North America.”

The weather is perfect and the fields are in pristine condition after being closed earlier this week because of heavy rain.

“I’ve got to give you guys a huge plug,” says Kjeld Brodsgaard.”You have an amazing city in terms of hosting. This venue (McArthur Island) is fantastic.
The grass fields — I’m envious.I wish I could put my boots on and go out there and play. It’s gorgeous.”
