KAMLOOPS — The man who pleaded guilty to his part in a hit-and-run that killed 16 year old Jennifer Gatey has been sentenced to 10 months in jail.

The sentence was handed to Jason Gourlay in BC Supreme Court in Kamloops today.

However, Gourlay was given 156 days’ credit for time served, meaning he will serve only about half of the 10-month sentence behind bars.

Gatey was struck and killed on November 4, 2016, while waiting for a bus near the corner of Pacific Way and Abbeyglen Way.

In April, Gourlay pleaded guilty to failing to remain at the scene of an accident and destroying evidence.

The crown had asked for a sentence of 11 to 14 months in jail, while Gourlay’s lawyer Jeremy Jensen asked for time served.

A week after entering the guilty plea, Gourlay apologized to Gatey’s family.

Several of Gatey’s family members were in court today to hear the sentence.
