Further growth on Allie Lake and Xusum Creek wildfires

KAMLOOPS — The Allie Lake fire north of Savona continues to grow and threaten properties in the Deadman Valley. 

The fire, which was first reported Wednesday, grew to 2,200 hectares by Friday evening and forced 14 properties to be evacuated. 

“Just kind of seeing the direction that the fire may be shifting in and may be going toward that’s what caused the decision to actually be putting the order in place to make sure that people are out of harm’s way,” said Michelle Nordstrom, information officer with the Emergency Operations Centre. 

An additional 51 properties were put on evacuation alert. 

Fire information officer Heather Rice said structure protection units would be on site Saturday.

“It has not been confirmed at this time if we’ve had any structural loss,” Rice said. “If we have there’s a possibility of outbuildings, but that has not been confirmed.”

Rice says cooler temperatures prevented any further growth overnight.

“We do have five unit crews in place, including initial attack crews. We do have an incident management team now assigned to the fire and currently the fire is holding at 2,200 hectares.” 

This fire is burning near the perimeter of last summer’s Elephant Hill wildfire. 

The Xusum Creek fire has also grown, increasing from 400 hectares Friday morning to 500 hectares by Saturday morning. 

“There was a little bit of growth, which is to be expected during suppression efforts,” fire information officer Brenna Ward said. “The amount of growth, it wasn’t anything that they’re too terribly concerned about. What we’re really happy about though is the level of success that crews did have yesterday.” 

The fire, located west of Lillooet near Anderson Lake, is now listed as 25 per cent contained.

Evacuation orders and alerts remain in affect for a number of properties near the Xusum Creek fire.
