WolfPack look to build on momentum going into CCBC playoffs

KAMLOOPS — Starting Thursday, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack baseall team will host the rest of the Canadian College Baseball Conference, as the 2018 CCBC Championships come to town.    The WolfPack enter the championship tournament as winners of seven of their final ten games to close out the regular season.   They scored an average of 7.6 runs per game in those ten.    The WolfPack hope the bats stay red hot into the playoffs, and maybe, just maybe bring the title back to Kamloops for the first time in nine years.

When it comes to scoring runs, the WolfPack have been lighting up the opposition for the past month.    After losing 2-0 to Okanagan College in the front half of a doubleheader April 8, the WolfPack have scored an average of 6.8 runs per game.    Momentum  they hope to maintain heading into the CCBC championship weekend.

“Starting to swing the bats really well.” says head coach Ray Chadwick, “The last ten games we’ve played pretty well.    We lost three of those, but offence is starting to swing the bat and hopefully that rolls into this week.”

That offensive surge has helped lead to more consistency from the WolfPack on both sides of the ball — and the timing could’nt be better.

“We’ve been a little inconsistent this year.” says graduating player Josh Hillis, “But we are definately rounding out right now.   This weekend’s been awesome so far.” (four game sweep against Vancouver Island last weekend) “The offence is really starting to get it going, and our pitching has been great all year.”

The CCBC championship tournament kicks off Thursday morning at Norbrock, with the number two ranked Okanagan College Coyotes taking on the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.     The WolfPack see their first action at 1pm that day against UFV — and they’re hoping they can fill the stands for their games.

“That would be the best thing we can ask for.” says Josh Hillis, “We get pretty good support from the fans.  I’d say we have the best crowds in the league here in Kamloops at Norbrock.  Having it for playoffs would be awesome.”

The tournament runs Thursday to Sunday at Norbrock, with the championship final set for Sunday at 1pm — and if the WolfPack has anything to say about it, they’ll be in the mix for that title come the weekend.

“Playing in our own backyard, hosting the nationals — a lot of good things to come out of it.” says Ray Chadwick, “We’re here, at home, playing well, so hopefully we continue on.”

“That’s the only goal we have.” says Hillis, “We gotta win the championship.”
