CRD issues evacuation order for areas of Nazko Valley

QUESNEL, B.C. — As the water level rises in the Nazko River west of Quesnel, some areas of the Nazko Valley are being ordered evacuated.

The Cariboo Regional District declared a state of local emergency for Electoral Area I around noon Sunday, and placed 46 properties under an evacuation order.

Emily Epp with the Emergency Operations Centre says the local Nazko First Nation community will also be issuing an evacuation order.

“Our number of 46 properties doesn’t include the band members, but they’re in that area as well.”

The BC River Forecast Centre upgraded the conditions of the Nazko River from a flood watch to a warning earlier in the day.

While the water is rising, Epp says the Nazko bridge is still passable for those evacuating.

“The evacuation route for the community is south via Nazko Road to Quesnel,” Epp said. “People have wondered about the Nazko bridge and we have confirmed that it is passable and open to single lane traffic.”

Residents under the evacuation order are asked to leave as quickly as possible, taking their critical items and pets. RCMP are assisting with evacuations.

Evacuees are asked to register with Emergency Support Services at the Quesnel Recreation Centre.

Anyone experiencing challenges evacuating is asked to call the CRD’s public information line at 1-866-759-4977.
