Winter just won’t go away

KAMLOOPS — Looks like winter weather is trying to hang on as long as it can.

Cold, wet weather continues to plague the interior, and the special weather statement for Interior highways continues this morning.

We can expect some snow in the high mountain passes, including the Coquihalla into the afternoon, then it is likely to turn to rain.

In Kamloops, we’re forecasting another 5-10 millimeters of rain by this afternnon, with showers to follow into tomorrow.

High water continues to create problems. On The Tk’emlups reserve, the culverts are full at the intersection of Paul Lake Road and the Yellowhead, and there were reports overnight of high water breaching the culverts and moving into the parking lots of nearby businesses.

In other areas where the high water has been a problem recently, officials are keeping a close eye on the situation, and warning residents to continue to sandbag where necessary in case the water continues to rise.

The weather is expected to get better by Thursday.

With the immediate threat of more evacuations on the back burner, emergency officials in the Okanagan are turning their attention to the amount of water in Okanagan Lake.

The concern is that if it keeps filling, and it’s only a few centimetres from topping out, water could start backing up in places like Mission and Mill Creek.

There’s only so much water that can be let out of the lake at one time to avoid creating problems further downstream in the South Okanagan.
