Sleds still delayed getting to Whistler for World Cup luge

WHISTLER, B.C. — Snowy conditions have delayed a shipment of sleds and kept World Cup luge competitors off the ice.

This weekend’s World Cup luge events in Whistler, British Columbia, were adjusted again Thursday because the sleds used in last weekend’s tour stop in Lake Placid, New York, have been sidetracked by heavy snow in parts of western Canada.

The sleds aren’t expected to arrive until Friday afternoon. The men’s, women’s and doubles races are all scheduled for Saturday — with one run only, instead of the usual two-run combined time format — and the team relay cancelled.

Teams can train Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The men’s, women’s and doubles races will be Saturday afternoon and evening.

“Excursions and shopping,” Olympic champion Natalie Geisenberger of Germany wrote on her Facebook page, detailing how some sliders are passing the down time. “There are worse things.”

One truck was stuck this week in Manitoba, about 1,200 miles from Whistler. Some stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway were closed because of the snow, stranding countless truckers on the highway — some for more than 24 hours.

After the shipment was delayed Tuesday, luge officials postponed Friday’s races. Further delays resulted in the truck reversing course and heading to Winnipeg, where a charter flight will get the sleds to Whistler on Friday.
