NICE, FRANCE — A Kamloops woman who is staying in Nice says she is very much looking forward to returning home.

Raffelina Sirianni, a colleague here at CFJC, spoke to us shortly after the attack ended yesterday.

France is nine hours ahead of Kamloops, and Sirianni says things began to return to normal at about noon local time today.

“We would look out over the balcony and tourists were out again trying to take pictures,” said Sirianni. “We did go into the market this afternoon and there was a heavy police presence all along the promenade and inside Old Nice, which is full of markets and cafes.”

Sirianni says people are now trying to go about their normal lives as best they can, but it’s impossible not to notice the heavy police presence.

“There are some stores that have closed with signs saying in light of the recent tragic events, that they would not be open today. Uber was also not operating today. And of course, Saturday starts three days of mourning here in France.”

“You can walk by a dozen police officers walking together at once through the market with large guns,” added Sirianni. “We had large vans all lined up along the promenade, just patrolling. They’ve still obviously got the area cordoned off where the tragedy took place.”

Sirianni and her friends are scheduled to leave Nice tomorrow morning as they begin their journey home to Canada.

“I’m looking quite forward to coming home and seeing my husband and my kids,” said Sirianni.
