Traditional Lytton River Festival to take place after wildfire postponement
LYTTON, B.C. — A traditional cultural and community event in the Village of Lytton will take place Thanksgiving weekend.
In a news release issued Monday (Sept. 18) morning, organizers of the Lytton River Festival say the traditional Labour Day weekend event will follow through on the first weekend of October after being postponed due to wildfires over the summer.
“Fire risk has subsided to the point where we can again safely host the festival,” Jessoa Lightfood, Lytton councillor and Lytton River Festival president says. “And to celebrate the season, we’re going to host a community feast on Thanksgiving Sunday.”
The festival celebrates the people and culture of the two major rivers that meet at Lytton, the Thompson and Fraser rivers. Organizers say it will feature music, dancing, children’s events, cultural displays and “make-and-take” sessions with artisans and traditional knowledge keepers. One of the unique children’s games includes “chicken poop bingo.”
