Expanded B.C. Urban Mayors’ Caucus to begin meeting again

Jun 15, 2023 | 9:19 AM

KAMLOOPS — Details are hard to come by, but there is confirmation the B.C. Urban Mayors’ Caucus is being resurrected.

On Tuesday (June 13), Kamloops Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson told council the caucus had held a meeting earlier that morning. Hamer-Jackson did not provide any further details, even as councillors pressed him for basics about the group’s mandate and how often it would be meeting.

Hamer-Jackson’s revelation came after Councillor Dale Bass brought forward a motion calling for the formation of a similar caucus made up of councillors from B.C.’s largest cities. Bass subsequently withdrew the motion, saying she wished Hamer-Jackson would have told her about the revival of the Urban Mayor’s Caucus before she brought it forward.

The B.C. Urban Mayors’ Caucus formed during the last term of municipal government. Mayors of 13 larger B.C. cities would hold regular, virtual meetings to discuss matters that affected all of their communities — notably homelessness, crime and related social issues.

After the 2022 municipal election, nine of the 13 mayors were no longer in office, including Kamloops’ Ken Christian and caucus co-chairs Colin Basran (Kelowna) and Lisa Helps (Victoria). The caucus has been dormant ever since.

CFJC Today has confirmed with Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog that an expanded Urban Mayors’ Caucus did indeed meet virtually Tuesday morning.

Krog says the caucus will now include mayors of all B.C. cities with populations of 80,000 or more.

Its co-chairs will be Ken Popove of Chilliwack and Marianne Alto of Victoria.

Contacted by Fraser Valley Today, Popove declined to comment, saying the group still needs to develop a protocol for communication with the media.
