KAMLOOPS — The wildfire discovered northwest of Ashcroft Tuesday (April 18) afternoon is now being held.

BC Wildfire Service Fire Information Officer Karley Desrosiers says there was no additional growth for the 20-hectares Southeast Skwish Creek wildfire overnight and its fire behaviour is significantly reduced as on Wednesday morning.

While the wildfire is being held, drivers in the area of Highway 99 near Pavilion Indian Reserve No. 1 are told to drive with caution. DriveBC issued a travel advisory due to limited visibility with wildfire smoke.

“We are continuing to receive reports of quite a bit of smoke visible from the highway,” Desrosiers says. “We have folks in the area, so be extra cautious… visibility throughout the day could be a concern.”

Desrosiers reminds residents that fuels within the Kamloops Fire Centre are still dry and they ignite quickly.

“In the next couple of weeks, as we receive more rain, we’ll start to see things green up. The likelihood of ignition will continue to decrease as we get into May and June but for now, it’s pretty dry out there,” she says.

Elsewhere, Desrosiers says an evacuation alert issued by the Ts’kw’aylaxw First Nation for Pavilion Indian Reserve No. 1 will remain in effect for precautionary reasons.
