NANAIMO, B.C. — Twelve hubs are being created across British Columbia as the province focuses on addressing repeat violent offenders. These hubs are part of the newly announced Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative, which is focused on targeted enforcement as well as enhanced investigation and monitoring.

The intervention initiative, announced Wednesday (April 12) by Premier David Eby, will see dedicated police, prosecutors and probation officers deal with repeat offenders. Local stakeholders and other existing programs will support the unique needs of each community through collaboration and information sharing.

In the B.C. Interior, hubs will be based in Kamloops as well as in Kelowna, Cranbrook and Williams Lake.

The province is investing $16 million over three years as part of the new Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement program (SITE) which will guide the initiative.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community, wherever they live,” said Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth. “The rise in repeat violent offending is top of mind for British Columbians and it’s also a top priority for our government. We’re taking action by standing up 12 hubs throughout B.C. to harness the expertise and experience that will disrupt repeat violent offending and make a real difference in B.C. neighbourhoods.”

The repeat offender initiative is an extension of B.C.’s Safer Communities Action Plan announced by Eby in November. The initiative and SITE will advance the plan’s goals of strengthening enforcement to hold individuals accountable and leveraging services in a strong attempt to create safe communities for everyone.
