KAMLOOPS — On January 10, the B.C. SPCA seized 16 Cane Corso dogs from a Clearwater residence. Ten of them were puppies, and all dogs were experiencing various levels of starvation. The dogs had faced substantial abuse.

The community of Clearwater was left horrified by the incident. Some community members have taken it into their own hands to try to repair the damage done by the negligent breeder.

Lee Christensen is the Clearwater resident pushing for the fundraiser, and a former member of the SPCA in Prince George. She states the fundraiser’s intention.

“We’re going to be giving the money to the SPCA,” said Christensen. “The money will be allocated to the Clearwater dogs.”

The raised money will go towards the recovery of the dogs, and to help them find a home. Christensen stresses the importance of this fundraiser for the town.

“The community as a whole has been impacted. It’s also about global perception. This is a black mark on our town. I’ve gathered a few people together to show that Clearwater steps up.”

The fundraiser will happen on February 18. And will involve numerous different initiatives. Among them are a bake sale, a 50/50 draw, a fundraising luncheon, a silent auction and door prizes.

The fundraiser’s organizers hope their reach extends to the communities surrounding Clearwater. Christensen has reached out to community authorities in Barriere and hopes for the word to spread to Kamloops.

“Our goal is $5,000. We’ve reached out to other communities, and we hope for a large effort from the whole region. Support is coming from all over,” said Christensen.

The dogs themselves are in different SPCA facilities across the province. Their status has yet to be released to the public. As the authorities investigate, more details will come in the forthcoming weeks.
