COLLINS: Hang on to your pennies in 2023
EVEN THOUGH WE don’t have physical pennies anymore, every virtual penny will count in 2023.
This will be a tough year for many Canadians, but especially for those on a fixed income. I have a decent pension but it will barely be able to cover my costs this year. And I can only imagine what it will be like for those who are restricted in thei access to income.
While younger people can demand higher salaries, save money working from home, get daycare relief and deal with other increases, those on fixed income can ill afford the high cost of assisted living. And if they are in they are still in their own home, how do they keep up with a five percent tax increase, increased costs for groceries, costs for keeping their lawns in shape, or their driveways cleared?
There are some deductions for seniors and disabled people, but there are many, young and old, who need much more. There are many who still have mortgages, and those mortgages need to be renewed this year.
