COLLINS: Mixed feelings about travel snafus

Jan 1, 2023 | 5:30 AM

NORMALLY, WHEN STORIES SURFACE about winter storms stranding travellers, I don’t have time for the whining and complaining from those who can’t get where they’re going, whether it be in the air, on the ferries, or the roads.

After all, snow happens, and while family is at the top of my priority list, sometimes the elements conspire against us.

As families spread farther and farther apart, often continents away, the effort to coordinate flights and manoeuvre through storms becomes a bit of a nightmare. And when plans go awry, and airports become full of people who can’t go anywhere, tempers flare.

But travellers need to understand that this is part of the “fun” of Christmas travel, and no one but Mother Nature is to blame.

Sometimes the chaos IS the fault of airlines and airports. As the intensity of winter storms increases with climate change, travel problems will get worse, and those in the travel industry will have to be better prepared to deal with emergency situations.

Southwest Airlines and Sunwing have been under increasing criticism this past week, and if all the allegations are true, the criticism is justified. Southwest has cancelled so many flights we’ve lost count. It has led to bedlam and the airline doesn’t seem to be able to get things under control.

And Sunwing has hundreds of travellers stranded in Mexico with very little support from the airline, according to weary flyers trying to get home to the comfort of their own homes.

In Canada, thousands are going to court to get their complaints for compensation resolved. Some of these cases are over three years old.

So while I don’t always commiserate with stranded travellers, when the resources aren’t there, the airlines and airports need to be held accountable.

In this case, some of them have failed miserably.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
