B.C. averages 383 new COVID-19 cases per day over long weekend, just 23 per day in Interior Health

VICTORIA — B.C. has come out of the long weekend with fewer active cases of COVID-19, and slowed spread within Interior Health.

In a media briefing Tuesday (Feb. 16), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry revealed that B.C. recorded 1,533 new cases of COVID-19 over the past four days — 452 on Saturday, 431 on Sunday, 348 on Family Day Monday and 302 on Tuesday. The average over the weekend was 383 new cases per day.

In Interior Health, there were 92 new cases found — an average of 23 per day.

The province-wide case count for COVID-19 is now 74,283 since the pandemic began in B.C., spread out as follows:

  • 17,135 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 392)
  • 43,984 — Fraser Health (up by 856)
  • 2,008 — Island Health (up by 58)
  • 7,008 — Interior Health (up by 92)
  • 4,104 — Northern Health (up by 135)
  • 149 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported 4,189 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Tuesday, a decrease of 158 from when last reported on Friday. There are 231 patients in hospital and 74 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 735 active cases of the virus, down 145 from Friday. Twenty-six people are hospitalized with 12 in critical care.

Sixty of the cases of COVID-19 are considered variants of concern — 40 of a variant originating in the United Kingdom, 19 of a variant originating in South Africa and one of a variant originating in Nigeria.

Twenty-six more people have died from the virus, increasing B.C.’s death toll to 1,314. In Interior Health, there were five more deaths for a total of 88.

There are 7,136 people under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 exposure.

A total of 68,705 are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry says 171,755 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 22,914 second doses.
