B.C. reports 519 new cases of COVID-19; active case load in Interior Health creeps higher

VICTORIA — While the active COVID-19 case load in B.C. continues to fall, active cases in Interior Health are rising steadily.

According to new numbers presented by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, there were 519 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Wednesday (Jan. 13), including 84 within Interior Health.

There are 4,810 active cases in the province, down by more than 200 from Tuesday. But in Interior Health, active cases rose from 895 to 905 Wednesday.

The new cases bring B.C.’s total to 59,072 since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 13,525 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 117)
  • 36,745 — Fraser Health (up by 235)
  • 1,186 — Island Health (up by 34)
  • 4,855 — Interior Health (up by 84)
  • 2,651 — Northern Health (up by 45)
  • 115 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 4)

Throughout B.C., there are 360 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 76 in critical care. Within Interior Health, there are 35 patients hospitalized with nine in critical care.

Twelve more people have died of the virus, lifting B.C.’s death toll to 1,031. Four of those deaths took place within Interior Health – one at Sunnybank in Oliver, two at McKinney Place in Oliver and one in Creekside Landing in Vernon.

Of the total recorded cases, 51,893 people are considered fully recovered, or 88 per cent.
