B.C.’s COVID-19 death toll swells by 28; case count eclipses 40,000 with 723 newly diagnosed

VICTORIA — Thursday (Dec. 10) is now the deadliest day of B.C.’s COVID-19 pandemic.

In her regular briefing, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 28 more deaths due to the virus in the province, by far the largest single-day total. It brings the province’s death toll to 587.

Henry said all but two of those who died were seniors living in long-term care settings.

The number of new cases of COVID-19 found in B.C. Thursday is 723, including 82 new cases in Interior Health. B.C.’s total case count is now 40,060, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 10,117 — Vancouver Coastal (up 135)
  • 25,398 — Fraser Health (up by 456)
  • 750 — Island Health (up by 10)
  • 2,502 — Interior Health (up by 82)
  • 1,199 — Northern Health (up by 40)
  • 96 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported 9,524 active COVID-19 cases Thursday, with 346 people in hospital and 83 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 679 active cases of the virus, with 19 people in hospital including five in intensive care.

There are now 11,947 people under active public health monitoring due to direct contact with confirmed cases of the virus.

A total of 28,948 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 72 per cent of all recorded cases.
