SURREY — B.C. has seen 234 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday (Oct. 29), including seven within Interior Health.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry held her regular Thursday update from Surrey rather than Victoria, saying she wanted to show her support to health workers in the Fraser Health region, which has seen a disproportionately high volume of COVID-19 cases.

The 234 new cases lift the provincial total to 14,109, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 4,588 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 43)
  • 8,036 — Fraser Health (up by 177)
  • 256 — Vancouver Island (up by 3)
  • 734 — Interior Health (up by 7)
  • 406 — Northern Health (up by 7)
  • 89 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

Henry reported the number of active cases still steadily rising, now at 2,344, including 86 people in hospital and 24 patients in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 89 active cases. No one is in hospital.

The death toll has risen to 262, with a single death recorded Thursday in the Fraser Health region. Unusually, Henry spoke at more length about the individual who died. Henry said the woman, who was in her 80s, had attended a birthday party in a home with fewer than 10 people. A participant brought COVID-19 into the home unknowingly, infecting nearly everyone in attendance. Henry said the example underscores how vigilant British Columbians must remain to prevent the spread of the virus.

There are 5,714 people under active public health monitoring due to exposures to known COVID-19 cases.

A total of 11,448 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 81 per cent of all reported cases.
