Kamloops Food Bank hosting Fall Rotary Food Drive this weekend

KAMLOOPS — After a record-breaking spring food drive, the Kamloops Food Bank is hoping for the same level of community support for Saturday’s (Sep. 19) event.

The Fall Rotary Food Drive will have similar safety measures in place as the spring. Volunteers will be spread out to drop off and sort food within their family bubbles.

The bright yellow donation bags were delivered with newspapers this week, but they can also be picked up through McDonald’s drive-thrus.

“We’re asking people to put them as far to the street as possible,” said Bernadette Siracky, Kamloops Food Bank executive director. “Rotarians are going to pick them up with their families, they’re going to come back to the food bank and they’re going to unload their vehicles themselves into one of four drop zones, and then they’re going to drive away. So it’s a very safe process that we have identified.”

With changing social programs, income fluctuations and a potential second wave of COVID-19, this food drive is crucial for shelves to stay stocked in the fall and winter months.

“We don’t know how many new people are going to need our service and how many of our clients that were on CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit), well supported in this interim, are going to be coming back,” Siracky said.

“Food banks across Canada are really bracing for a spike in need.”
