KAMLOOPS — Siblings Katie and Johnny Ludvig don’t know what lies ahead in their respective sports.

The Kamloops athletes, like many around the world, have to wait to see how COVID-19 impacts the sporting world.

Johnny is the captain of the Portland Winterhawks, while Katie is an outside hitter with the TRU women’s volleyball team. With U SPORTS cancelling the fall season, the earliest Katie can play is the new year.

“Obviously it’s pretty disappointing for all of us,” she said. “We’ve been preparing for summer to start in September, and to hear it’s delayed until January possibly and maybe not even January is pretty upsetting.”

The WHL hopes to start the season Oct. 2. But that plan too is in jeopardy.

“I’m hoping it starts up on Oct. 2, but no one really knows,” noted Johnny, who scored 17 goals and added 45 assists in 60 games last season. “That’s the plan and I’m looking forward to that, but just going to keep training and be ready for when that happens.”

Johnny and older sister Katie work out up to five days a week with trainer David Stride. They also do cardio sessions on the weekends. They are just trying to get any kind of edge they can get during these unprecedented times.

“It’s a time you can use as an excuse to not be training and think that no one else is training, or you can use it to step up your game completely,” said Johnny. “I think that’s what me and my sister have been doing, is taking advantage of it and just working hard and being ready for our next seasons to start up.”

The siblings from Kamloops are also taking more time to work on their games in the film room.

“It’s a time to work on yourself physically and mentally in different aspects by watching more video and talking to your teammates and just finding different ways to get ready that we haven’t had the opportunity to do before,” said Katie. “It’s hard to look at it positively sometimes, but when you really think about it, it’s an extra three or four months we wouldn’t normally have.”

The focus is on preparing like any other offseason. They’re also having a blast training together.

“It’s definitely fun,” said Johnny. “We have a good bond and I think we both have a goal in mind, so we push each other every day in the gym. We definitely have a lot of fun with it, too.”

Katie added, “I wouldn’t have it any other way. He sets our standards pretty high for each other and I’m always trying to keep up to him, so it’s a pretty good workout buddy to have in the offseason.”
