More Evacuation Orders and Alerts issued in Cariboo – Chilcotin

WILLIAMS LAKE – Flooding led to a series of Evacuation Orders and Evacuation Alerts issued by the Cariboo Regional District’s Emergency Operations Centre (CRD EOC) Sunday.

An Evacuation Order was issued to one property around the Hawks Creek crossing at Likely Road, northeast of Williams Lake. Another five properties in the area were issued Evacuation Alerts.

An Evacuation Order was issued to one property along Forglen road, at the southern tip of McLeese Lake.

And an Evacuation Alert issued in the Knickerbocker – Wells Road area was expanded to include five properties. An Evacuation Order is already in place for another neighbouring property. The properties are located northwest of Quesnel.

Evacuation Orders are issued to properties when flooding has begun or is imminent. It instructs residents to leave their properties immediately.

Evacuation Alerts are issued to residents to prepare them for the possibility of an Evacuation Order. Residents who receive an alert should be ready to leave their premises as quickly as possible. When issued an alert, property owners are advised to prepare an emergency kit that includes personal papers, medications, eyeglasses and keepsakes. Pets and livestock should be moved to safe locations.

The CRD EOC was activated April 18th when it became apparent the region would seeing flooding due to large snowpacks and warming temperatures. The Cariboo Regional District issued a Local State of Emergency April 22. Two days later, Williams Lake and Quesnel made their own declarations of a Local State of Emergency.

Flooding is being reported from the Fort St. John area in B.C.’s north to the Cache Creek area in the south.
