Canada falls to U.S. in gold-medal game at FIBA Americas women’s U18 championship
VALDIVIA, Chile — Canada had to settle for silver at the 2016 FIBA Americas women’s under-18 championship on Sunday after falling to the United States 109-62.
Mikaela Brewer of Barrie, Ont., led Canada with 16 points while Toronto’s Alyssa Jerome added 12.
American forward Lauren Cox had 15 points and nine rebounds and was named tournament MVP. Tyasha Harris scored a game-high 18 points as the U.S. won the event for the eighth year in a row and improved to 53-2 all-time in FIBA Americas U18 championship play.
“We went over a lot of things (Canada) would run offensively and how we wanted to defend,” said American coach Suzie McConnell-Serio.
“We got contributions from everyone, and it was quite a performance, because Canada is a great team.”
The U.S. had six players score in double digits and committed just three turnovers while forcing Canada into 24 turnovers.
Canada kept it close after the first quarter and trailed 23-20. But the Americans exploded in the second quarter and took a 17-point lead into halftime.
The U.S. kept up its pace to start the second half, outscoring the Canadians by 19 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
In the third-place game, Brazil beat Puerto Rico 70-64.
