RALEIGH — Logan Stankoven’s first career hat-trick helped lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 7-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks Thursday (Oct. 8) at Lenovo Center.

The 23-year-old Kamloopsian scored three consecutive goals – twice in the second period and once in the third – to reach 100 career NHL points (45 goals and 55 assists) in 188 games over four seasons. He’s tallied four goals and a plus-2 rating in five games this season.

Stankoven made it 5-1 Carolina with a short-handed goal at 13:13 of the second period when he drove the net and scored top shelf. He then roofed a shot off a no-look backhand pass from Taylor Hall at 19:02 to make it 6-1, and completed the hat trick with a wrist shot at 11:36 of the third to make it 7-1

The former Kamloops Blazers captain is the fourth player in Hurricanes franchise history with an even-strength, power-play and short-handed goal in a game. He joined Sebastian Aho (Dec. 7 and Jan. 13, 2019), Erik Cole (Nov. 23, 2002) and Sandis Ozolinsh (March 4, 2001).

The 3-1-1 Hurricanes have won three in a row to sit second in the Metropolitan Division, while the 2-3-0 Canucks have lost two straight to sit sixth in the Pacific Division.

Stankoven – who won the Stanley Cup in June, and celebrated in Kamloops in August – is in the first year of his eight-year, US $48 million contract signed last summer.

The Hurricanes are next in action on Saturday (Oct. 10) night in Chicago against the Blackhawks.
