COLLINS: Terrorism is not going to go away
LAST WEDNESDAY, I wore my orange shirt with pride. I have long supported the fight by indigenous people for equality and an equal voice in the running of our country.
When the day of Truth and reconciliation was done, I realized just how little progress we have made both in truth and reconciliation. After a long series of hearings, the report on truth and reconciliation, examining the fate of those who went through the residential terrorism, there were 94 action items in the 2015 report to the government. Thatʼs how many calls went out for help. But very little has been done. To be fair, no one could deal with all the items in the report overnight, but very little has been done so far.
Now, some of the items would be very difficult to implement quickly. Some would require major changes in our government legislation and others would cost an awful lot of money, but we did make a little progress.
The government promised to support the report. Prime Minister Carney said there is still a long way to go, but the government is not helping when they announce a brand new pipeline to be built across Indigenous land with relatively little communication with our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
