Candidates step up in Clinton, CSRD after extended nomination deadlines

CLINTON, B.C. — Residents in the Village of Clinton and in the North Shuswap now have a better idea who will be representing them in local government.

Both the Village of Clinton and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) had to extend last Friday’s (Sept. 11) nomination deadline to Monday (Sept. 14) due to insufficient candidates.

In Clinton’s case, the village saw three people – incumbents – Sandi Burrage, Darrell Schpansky and Nicholas Kosovic – put their names forward for the four councillor seats. David Park, who was in his third term as councillor, did not run for re-election.

Ahead of Monday’s extended deadline, village officials say Jessica Lawrence was the only other person to file paperwork, meaning all four council candidates – as well as incumbent Clinton mayor Roland Stanke – are set to be acclaimed to office.

As for the CSRD, five people stepped forward on Monday to represent Area F, which includes Scotch Creek, Lee Creek, Celista, Magna Bay, Anglemont, St. Ives, and Seymour Arm. That includes incumbent Jay Simpson as well as challengers John Bolt, former 100 Mile House mayor Mitch Campsall, Richard Shelley and Shawn Smith.

There will be a number of other elections in the CSRD, including in the Falkland area, where there are four candidates running. Elsewhere, Marty Gibbons, who represents the Eagle Bay/Sunnybrae/Tappen area and Natalya Melnychuk in the Sorrento/Blind Bay area have been acclaimed to another term.

Candidates have until 4:00 p.m. Friday (Sept. 18) to withdraw, and the official campaign period starts on Sept. 19. The list of names on the ballot will be made official by end of day Monday, Sept. 21. In the case where elections are not needed, candidates will be acclaimed to office on Monday as well.
