UPDATE (8:00 p.m.): The BC Wildfire Service says the new wildfire near Jacko Lake is no longer burning out of the control.

The fire, that’s suspected to be caused by lightning, is classified as being held, meaning it’s projected to remain within its 44-hectare perimeter.

In an update at around 7:00 p.m. Saturday, the wildfire service says the Jacko Lake fire is mostly burning in areas of grassy fuels. It’s showing Rank 1 with pockets of Rank 2 fire behaviour, meaning a smouldering ground fire with a slow rate of spread and a low vigour surface fire, respectively.

“Crews made good progress today and will continue to establish and bolster containment lines,” the wildfire service states. “A Kamloops Fire Rescue crew will be working onsite overnight. Danger tree assessing and falling is ongoing.”

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the South Thompson region. According to its hourly forecast as of publication, Environment Canada projects Kamloops to experience a few showers or thunderstorms through Sunday (Aug. 23) afternoon.

The weather agency is calling for around five to 10 millimetres of precipitation in Kamloops Saturday night, except for around 25 millimetres for areas near thunderstorms. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h are also expected, except for areas near thunderstorms, which could experience gusts of up to 80 km/h.

Elsewhere, a spot fire near Campbell Range Road south of the Dallas neighbourhood in Kamloops is being held at 0.009 hectares. It is also suspected to be caused by lightning.
