UPDATE: New Green Lake-area fire being held at 3.7ha

70 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — (UPDATE 9:30 p.m.): A new wildfire that sparked near the community of Green Lake in the south Cariboo is currently being held at 3.7 hectares in size.

That’s the latest update from the BC Wildfire Service issued just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday (July 30).

The fire located approximately a kilometre west of Round Lake and northeast of the already evacuated community of 70 Mile House is believed to have been sparked by lightning.

“This wildfire is highly visible to the community of Green Lake and surrounding areas,” the BC Wildfire Service said in a statement around 4:45 p.m. “It is displaying rank 2 and 3 fire behaviour, meaning it is a low to moderately vigorous fire.”
