Smoke from Boston Bar-area wildfire to blanket Kamloops as fire activity increases

BOSTON BAR, B.C. — Waves of smoke from the Brunswick Creek wildfire near Boston Bar are expected to filter in Kamloops’ airspace over the next few days.

In an update Tuesday (July 7) morning, the BC Wildfire Service says clearer conditions and gusty winds increased fire behaviour and activity Monday afternoon. It adds smoke from the wildfire has hampered aerial operations but has allowed ground crews to make good progress.

The wildfire is still measured at around 1,230 hectares and listed as a fire of note.

“Smoke from the wildfire is highly visible to the public in the vicinity of Highway 1, including into the Merritt and Kamloops regions. Smoke may continue to affect visibility in the coming days,” the wildfire service says.

Meantime, gusts of up to 40 km/h in the Fraser Canyon are expected Tuesday and Wednesday (July 8). While a stretch of cooler temperatures are forecast later in the week, the wildfire service says no meaningful rainfall is expected.

Evacuation orders are in place for Fraser Valley Regional District properties in North Bend and the Fishblue Lake area near Boothroyd. An evacuation alert is in place for Boston Bar and Canyon Alpine.

Elsewhere, evacuation orders have been issued by Boothroyd Indian Band and Boston Bar First Nation.

As of publication, 96 wildfire service firefighters are responding to the Brunswick Creek complex. They have the support of 12 helicopters, including two with night vision, along with nine pieces of heavy equipment, structural protection crews and equipment.

The wildfire service says structure protection is in place for identified properties. Additionally, multiple local fire departments in the area are also supporting those efforts.

The Brunswick Creek wildfire is suspected to be human-caused.
