SALMON ARM, B.C. — The Shuswap Memorial Cemetery Trails in Salmon Arm are closed after a woman was attacked by a bear in the area on Sunday (June 21).

Salmon Arm RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Simon Stott said officers were dispatched to the area when the report came in shortly after 10:00 a.m.

The Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) said the woman was walking with her off-leash dog when she encountered a black bear and her cub.

The dog chased the cub up a tree and the mother bear attacked the woman, causing minor injuries.

“Members attended and located a female with lacerations and puncture wounds along her limbs and torso about 1.5 kilometres up the trail system,” said Stott.

“We assisted with some first aid until (Emergency Health Services) attended. When EHS arrived, they took the female to Shuswap Lake General Hospital.”

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service took over the scene and the trails were closed to protect public safety.

The BCCOS said officers conducted an initial sweep and did not find any bears.

“The BCCOS investigation, which included assessing the attack site and interviewing the victim, determined the attack was defensive in nature. No efforts to locate or capture the bears will be made,” said a statement from the BCCOS.

“The BCCOS will continue to work with the municipality to determine the re-opening of the trails. Conservation officers are monitoring bear activity in the area.”

The City of Salmon Arm said the trails will be closed until further notice.

“Public safety is our top priority. Please respect all closure signs and avoid the area until the closure is lifted,” said a statement from the City of Salmon Arm.

“Updates will be posted on the city’s website and social media channels.”
