‘Russian desperation’; TRU expert believes Russian threat should be taken seriously

KAMLOOPS — On Wednesday (June 10), the Russian foreign ministry threatened Canada over this county’s support of Ukraine after a Canadian drone maker signed a new deal to support the war effort.

The Russian representative called Canada a ‘warmonger’, stating they reserve the right to ‘an appropriate response’. While she doesn’t expect military action, TRU political science professor Saira Bano believes Canada does need to take the threat seriously.

“There is no chance they are going to fire a missile or bomb the facility, but there is going to be sub-conventional attack, which means the firm can be the target of a cyber attack. There can be a lone wolf who can attack the firm,” said Bano. “There is a threat of physical attack but that is a sub-conventional one, not state to state.”

Bano called the use of the ‘warmonger’ by Russia as a propaganda technique, stating the only aggressor in the war is the Russians.

Now years into what was supposed to be a quick war for Russia, Bano sees the threat to Canada as a desperation move.

“They are two folds. They are co-producing this critical drone technology which is important for Ukraine to incorporate this technology on the front line, which is giving Ukraine an edge in this war,” added Bano. “And plus having production on Canadian soil will keep this critical technology safe from Russian air strikes. That is why this threat shows Russian desperation.”
