KAMLOOPS — WildSafe BC has issued a public safety notice after cougar sightings were reported in the West Juniper and Rose Hill areas.

WildSafe officials said spotting wild animals can be common in those areas.

“These locations are known wildlife corridors and occasional cougar sightings can occur as animals move through the region,” said WildSafe.

The organization said you should keep several things in mind to stay safe in areas where cougars have been spotted:

  • Carry bear spray when hiking or walking.
  • Keep pets leashed and under control at all times on trails.
  • Travel in groups and make plenty of noise.
  • Never leave your children alone or unsupervised.

“If you encounter a cougar, keep calm and never run. Make yourself look as large as possible and back away slowly, keeping the cougar in view and allowing a clear exit for the cougar,” said WildSafe.

“Pick up children and small pets immediately. Never run or turn your back as sudden movements may provoke an attack.”

Any wildlife sightings should be reported to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.
