New Afton mine owner to pay nearly $500K penalty for fatal 2021 mud rush incident
KAMLOOPS — The operator of a Kamloops-area mine has to pay nearly half a million dollars in fines and penalties, more than five years after a deadly mud rush claimed the life of one worker and injured two others.
Charges were sworn in January this year, and New Gold has until Oct. 30 to pay the $460,000 penalty, which was imposed Thursday (Oct. 15) in Kamloops provincial court, after the company admitted to violating the B.C. Mines Act.
The sentence includes a $400,000 fine jointly agreed to by the prosecution and the defence as well as a mandatory $60,000 victim surcharge.
