KAMLOOPS — RCMP say a major police presence at a treed area on the Kamloops North Shore over the weekend is linked to a suspicious death, and they’ve released the identity of the victim in the hopes of furthering the investigation.

Officers have been on scene near Overlanders Park, not far from the Henry Grube Education Centre, since just after 9:30 p.m. on Sunday (Oct.11). This morning, a body was removed from the scene as forensics investigators continued to comb through the area.

Police have identified the victim as Robert Patrick Murray, 70, and say he was also known as Bobby.

“As part of the investigation and being able to confirm the identity of the man that was found deceased, we have been able to work with the family and they were able to provide us with a photo to help us advance the investigation,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier told CFJC Today.

The circumstances behind Murray’s death remain unclear, but police said he was found dead inside a tent. When CFJC Today stopped by around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, investigators in white protective suits appeared to be focusing on one of three tents located inside the area that was taped off.

While witnesses on social media described hearing several gunshots around 9:30 p.m. Sunday evening, police weren’t able to speak to that, only confirming that the death is being investigated as suspicious.

“What I can say is that our forensic identification team has been working with our investigators on this file,” Napier added. “These can be complex investigations and our Serious Crime Unit is taking conduct of this file.”

“The investigation remains active and ongoing. Further information will be released when its available and when doing so will not compromise the investigation.”

Investigators are now working to establish Murray’s movements and whereabouts in the days leading up to his death. They’re also asking people who witnessed suspicious activity in the vicinity of Kitchener Crescent or the shoreline of the North Thompson River on Saturday or Sunday to reach out.

“We are asking anyone who may have recently spoken with him, previously spent time with him, or knows where he had been staying or spending his time to contact police,” Staff Sgt. Kevin McIntyre of the Kamloops RCMP Investigative Services, said in a statement.

“Even information that may seem insignificant could help advance this investigation.”

People with information are asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP and cite file number 2026-34269.
