KAMLOOPS — Just as residents in East Kamloops neighbourhoods impacted by this week’s water main break were able to turn on their taps for essential water use, they’re being told to temporarily halt said water use for most of the day.

From 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday (May 14), the City of Kamloops says crews are undertaking a critical repair of the southeast sector water main. To ensure water service can resume following the repair, the city is telling residents in Barnhartvale, Campbell Creek, Dallas, Juniper Ridge, Rose Hill and Valleyview to temporarily cease their water use during that 10-hour stretch.

Safe drinking water trucks will be available 24/7 the BC Wildlife Park, Dallas Park, Fire Hall No. 6 in Dallas and Valleyview Arena until 11:59 p.m. Friday (May 15). Starting Saturday (May 16), for a minimum of five days, potable water will be available from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Fire Hall No. 6 and Valleyview Arena.

Residents are asked to bring their own containers for potable water. They may collect up to 100 litres of water per visit.

The city says schools in the area will have access to water today. In a news release issued Wednesday night, School District 73 (SD73) said Dallas, Ralph Bell, RL Clemitson, Juniper Ridge and Marion Schilling Elementary schools, as well as Valleyview Secondary, will be open for students and staff Thursday.

In an update posted to social media Thursday, SD73 says the recently reopened schools may use water for essential use only, such as the washroom. The school district says safe drinking water will be provided.
