KAMLOOPS — With the latest provincial budget now well combed through, the City of Kamloops is warning residents of potential impacts.

Several changes are set to effect in the community, including the removal of the homeowner grant boost for residents living in the Interior and north of the province.

“Effective July of next year, 2027, the additional ($200) homeowner grant will be removed from your taxation piece,” said Director of Corporate Services David Hallinan. “Early estimates indicate that will be about an 8 per cent tax increase, of which none of it is the responsibility of local government.”

The province is also making changes to the speculation and vacancy tax, along with changes to the interest rate on those who utilize the tax deferment program.

“We are already seeing some changes with those who look to utilize the provincial deferral system in terms of being able to have the province pay their property taxes, being able to defer the property taxes and then essentially settle that debt at point of distribution of estate. We are seeing increasing interest rates that are being applied in terms of those costs impacting people.”
