SCOTCH CREEK, B.C. — (UPDATE 10:50 a.m.): Interior Health (IH) says more than 200 private well users in the Scotch Creek area should take precautions following a large 15,000 diesel spill at the Scotch Creek Co-op cardlock Tuesday (May 5) evening.

“This is a precautionary measure based on current information,” the health authority said in a statement Thursday. “We understand this may be concerning and IH will continue to closely monitor this situation in consultation with the Ministry of Environment and Parks.”

Interior Health said people who live south of and along Butters Road, Saratoga Road and Kenwood Gate in Scotch Creek should monitor their private wells for possible impacts from the spill.

“Diesel fuel has a very distinct odour and can be detected at very low concentrations in drinking water,” Interior Health added. “If you notice any fuel odour or visible fuel (oily sheen – rainbow-colored film), [use] an alternate water source for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation and bathing.”

Several government agencies are responding to the spill that happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday while fuel was being delivered.

The B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks says the company has hired a response contractor and an environmental consultant to help with clean up efforts. It notes officials from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, Environment Canada, Interior Health, the First Nation Health Authority, and the Skwlāx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw are also responding.

“The response contractor initiated onsite response on the night of May 5. The environmental consultant is mobilizing to the site,” the Ministry of Environment and Parks said.

“[We] continue to monitor response actions.”
