KAMLOOPS — The annual Kamloops Rotary Spring Food Drive in support of the Kamloops Food Bank concluded Saturday (April 25) with a grand total of 60,000 pounds of non-perishable donations.

The Food Bank said this year tied with the fifth-most out of the previous 36 food drives.

“Thank you very much! That will go a very long way in helping us create a hunger-free community,” said the Food Bank.

Last year, the Food Bank received a record-breaking 75,000 pounds of food in one day.

The donations may keep coming in from this year’s Food Drive, as some households were missed.

“We understand that many houses did not have their bags picked up yesterday despite the monumental effort by our volunteers,” said the Food Bank in a public statement.

“Luckily, there are plenty of options to make your donation still count! You can drop off your donations at any grocery store with a red Kamloops Food Bank barrel, or bring the donation down to our warehouse during normal business hours.”

Historically, the Spring Food Drive goes a long way to keeping the Food Bank’s shelves stocked.

“People are really hearing the message and knowing that food banks across the country are stretched – including us,” said Kamloops Food Bank Executive Director Bernadette Siracky.

“The need is grand, people are here. We understand as a food bank that we are not solving poverty, we are simply providing emergency food to people who need it.”
