KAMLOOPS — The Propolis Cooperative Housing Society is moving ahead with plans for a new four-storey, 27-unit apartment building on St. Paul Street in downtown Kamloops.

Located at the intersection of St. Paul Street and 10th Avenue, Propolis expects to begin construction as soon as this year. If all goes well, it also expects the building to be ready by early 2028.

“The units will range in size from studios to three-bedrooms,” executive director Lindsay Harris said. “We’ll have some community garden space on site. We’ll have flexible amenity rooms and we’ll have an on-site car share.”

The building will be similar to Propolis’ other housing project on Tranquille Road that is also expected to get underway this year.

This week, a housing agreement with the City of Kamloops was approved, allowing the development to have 11 fewer parking stalls than required by city bylaws. Propolis plans to replace the space that would have been occupied by these parking stalls with additional landscaping.

“What we’re really committed to is building homes in thriving, walkable neighbourhoods,” Harris said, noting the reduced parking is not expected to be an issue as tenants aren’t likely to all own vehicles. She also said the car-share is an option if they happen to need a vehicle for a short duration.

“In thinking about how well situated that site is, its proximity to downtown and the river walking trail, there is so much there that is going to create a vibrant living space for the people that live in that building,” Harris added.

“We’re really excited to be bringing cooperative homes to that site.”
